John Bell

Where are all my 1990s friends???

I wish I had a nickel for every time we saw Widespread Panic at UGA in Athens, Georgia.

John Bell. Relaxed. With his stubbled beard, long hair, flannel shirt, worn jeans, and soulful expression. He always reminded me of an unassuming, accidental rockstar. Until he opened his mouth.

In 1998, he brought “Panic in the Streets” to downtown Athens. John Bell stood at the mic on Clayton Street with his quiet, humble presence and somehow commanded an entire city. Streets were shut down. Businesses overflowed. Rooftops filled with people.

His voice rolled through downtown like a living thing—echoing off brick buildings, drifting through North campus, and turning a free concert into a priceless experience.

I didn’t know then what I know now. That one day he would live in my hometown. That he would kindly and generously support a feeding initiative that serves so many of our hungry kids every week. I’m grateful for his music. But I’m more grateful for his heart.

He’s still a rockstar. But he’s also a hometown hero. I can’t think of anyone more worthy of the stage.
